Most recruiters don't scroll through profiles. They type a job title and a few skills into search and work down the results. If your profile doesn't contain those terms, you don't show up, however good you are. This guide covers how to fix that, and how to contact recruiters yourself.

To get noticed by recruiters on LinkedIn, pick one target role, copy the job titles and skills that repeat in real postings for it, and put them in your headline, Skills, About and Experience. Then complete your basics, set Open to Work for recruiters, and message recruiters directly.

How recruiters find candidates on LinkedIn

Recruiters typically search by job title and skills, then narrow the results with filters such as location and industry. That has three consequences for you:

  • Keywords decide whether you appear. If a term isn't on your profile, a search for it can't surface you.
  • Basics are filters. A missing location or industry can keep you out of narrowed results.
  • The first impression is brief. What shows in the list, mainly your name, photo and headline, decides whether you get clicked.

Seven steps to get found

1. Pick one target role

A profile aimed at one role reads clearer and matches more searches than one aimed at everything. If you're considering two, pick the primary one for the headline and mention the other in About.

2. Collect the keywords from real job postings

Open five postings for the role. Note the job titles and skills that show up in most of them. Those are your LinkedIn keywords for recruiters, and they come straight from the people hiring. For a deeper walkthrough, see our skills guide.

3. Put them in your headline and skills

Lead the headline with the role, add the repeated skills you can honestly claim, and list the same skills in your Skills section. See headline examples for formats that work.

4. Work keywords into About and Experience

Use the same terms in your About section and in experience bullets, but only where they read naturally. Stuffing a list of keywords hurts readability and doesn't help with people.

5. Complete the basics

Set your location and industry, add a clear photo, and make sure your recent roles have descriptions, not just titles. An incomplete profile is easy to skip.

6. Turn on Open to Work for recruiters

LinkedIn lets you signal you're open to work either publicly or to recruiters only. Fill in the specific job titles and locations you want so the signal matches your target role.

7. Reach out to recruiters directly

Don't wait to be found. To find recruiters on LinkedIn, search for "recruiter" or "talent acquisition" plus a company or industry, then filter by People. Follow them, then connect with a short note.

Sample message (illustrative)

Hi Sam, I'm a customer success manager with four years in B2B SaaS and I'm exploring senior roles in the space. I noticed you recruit for the team at Northwind. I'd be glad to share my background if there's a fit. Thanks for considering it.
